For persons of faith, a career in public service can be especially challenging. The values of the secular culture we are operating within in most of our communities and in the United States as a whole are subject to frequent societal modification as society evolves. That evolution, or devolution if you prefer, often involves foundational values compromises. In the workplaces we lead, the traditions, values set of the community and the organizational culture of government may not necessarily match those timeless values that persons of faith hold most dear. This could inevitably lead to a values conflict collision. Mark Lauzier, Budget Manager for St. Lucie County, will discuss some of these challenges. There will undoubtedly be instances in which our faith beliefs will come into direct conflict with the organizational culture and our commitment as servant leaders to service, excellence and integrity. There is, however, a strategy that never fails if we choose to seek and follow that timeless advice. You will be inspired by the comments of your colleagues, and hopefully, more prepared to make good choices before your fiery trial arises.
